School Picnic - 7.7.17

Today was our school picnic day and the sun shone as we ate our lunch outside. This afternoon we dipped our toes into the paddling pool and had a treat ice lolly. It's been a great day!

On Monday, we went to Sir John Laws School for the music festival. We joined other schools and performed lots of songs that we had been learning in our music sessions.

Our school reports went home yesterday and Miss Forrester is really proud of all of us and what we have achieved this year. Please fill in the comment slip that went home with the reports.

Next week is our Year 2 performance and today we designed our own programme front covers. Costumes need to be in on Monday and please continue to practise using loud, clear voices as well as expression and animated body language.

Reminder - it is open evening on Monday 5-7pm. We have our clay models of Redbourn highstreet and our David Hockney work to share.

Air Ambulance Landing - 30.6.17

We've had a very busy week in Maple Class. On Monday afternoon we shared what we have learnt in French this year by hosting our French CafĂ© for our parents. Thank you to everyone that came.

On Tuesday, we had a very special visit from Herts Air Ambulance. They landed on our field to say thank you for raising money for them during the fun run. We were astonished that the helicopter was worth 6 and a half million pounds!

This week was our final Roald Dahl week in English. We focused on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and invented our own factory workshops. We imagined that we were one of the lucky golden ticket winners and wrote a diary entry about visiting Willy Wonka's factory.
Luca - 'My  factory room had small gingerbread man workers. There is lightening which blows holes into the ground and sprays out skittles'
Lola - 'My factory has a little sugar pop helper that takes you on a tour around the room. When you suck the sugar pops, it gets bigger and bigger until it explodes!'

Tomorrow is the Strawberry Fayre - we look forward to seeing you all there!

Sports Day - 23.6.17

We've had a fantastic morning taking part in Sports Day. Well done to all of the children for their sportsmanship and hard work. We're very proud of you! To celebrate Healthy Living Week, we made posters to inform others on how to stay healthy. Here are just a few of our ideas:
Regular exercise
Personal hygiene (brushing our teeth twice a day, washing hands and body, wearing clean clothes etc)
Eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables
Drinking lots of water
Eating breakfast each morning
Having lots of sleep!

In maths. we've been learning to use directional language (left, right, clockwise, anti clockwise). We planned a route for Fantastic Mr Fox to catch the chickens without being caught by the farmers!

Well done to all of the children who have been completing their Roald Dahl books.

Please continue to practise your performance lines at home. We are looking for loud voices and lots of expression.

Star of the week is Kiki for persevering with her spelling. Night is spending the weekend with Annie.

Green Day - 16.6.17

Maple Class are writing our blog today because on Friday it was green day so we couldn't use our computer. On green day, we couldn't use electricity and we thought carefully about how to look after our world.

We have started our work on Roald Dahl. We have a selection of different Roald Dahl stories that we can take home to read to get a bookworm badge. In the class, we are reading Fantastic Mr Fox. In creative writing, we wrote our own stories called 'The Next Adventures of Fantastic Mr Fox'. We designed new characters with alliterative names
Rude Rabbit and he always wears a purple top hat - Beth
Bossy Bunny helped Fantastic Mr Fox by bossing the farmer's dog around so that Mr Fox could get his chickens - Alfie
Curious Cat helped Fantastic Mr Fox by giving him slippers so that the farmers couldn't see his paw prints when he was stealing the chickens - Erin

In Maths, we have been investigating shape. We counted the vertices, faces and edges of 3D shapes. We sorted 2D shapes into Venn diagrams and also looked at finding the line of symmetry.

We are busy rehearsing for our End of Year Play - please keep practising your lines at home.

Remember this Friday is Sports Day! It is going to be a warm week so everybody needs water bottles and sun hats in school.

Friday 26 May 2017

May Day Celebrations - 26.5.17

Well done to all of the children for their fantastic dancing in our May Day celebrations this morning. Everybody worked as a team and remembered more than one routine. We all came to school dressed in smart clothes. Our May King was William B and our queen was Delilah.

Today in celebration assembly all the children who ran in the Fun Run last weekend proudly wore their medals.

We have been geographers this week. On Tuesday we went on a village walk to identify different types of buildings on Redbourn highstreet. After collecting our data, we made maps of the highstreet and colour coded buildings by using a key. We decided that the highstreet now has lots of shops because Redbourn is growing in population.

Home learning is to keep a record of what you get up to over the holidays as well as learning lines for our Year 2 play if you have a speaking part. Have a safe and enjoyable half term and see you back in school on Tuesday 6th June.

Walk to school week - 19.5.17

Well done to all of the children who have walked to school this week, even in the pouring rain! Unfortunately our village walk was cancelled today due to the weather but we will be rearranging this for a day next week.

Maple Class are still loving Percy the Park Keeper books so this week we used descriptive language to write a character description of Percy. Mrs O worked with small groups of children to create illustrations of the characters using watercolours. We have made a lovely new English display with all of the wonderful work.

We are continuing to practise our dances for May Day celebrations. Please do come and watch us next Friday.

Well done to Lola who is star of the week for taking her learning forward during Learning Through Play. Jamie is spending the weekend with Night for thinking carefully and improving his work.

It's been lovely to hear Erin and Kiki playing the piano during celebration assembly the last two weeks - well done girls! Maple Class were very proud.

It's the fun run on Sunday - let's hope for sunshine!

Book Review Week - 12.5.17

This week we have been continuing to read Percy the Park Keeper books from Nick Butterworth's collection. We had a vote and decided that 'After the Storm' was our favourite so far so we wrote a book review based around this story. We thought about our favourite part of the story, who we would recommend it to and also how we might change the story to make it even better.

In Maths, we have been learning how to subtract using an empty number line.

We can't wait for the school disco tonight!

Well done to Nat for getting Star of the Week for being a fantastic friend. Night is spending the weekend with Freddie.

Remember next week is Walk to school week!

Fractions - 5.5.17

We have been learning to find a fraction of a number this week in Maths. We've applied our division strategies to find halves, quarters and thirds of a number. We've been practising to recall our halves and learnt that we can mentally quarter by halving and halving again.

In English, we wrote letters to Rickmansworth Waterway Trust thanking them for our trip. We hope to get a reply!

We've been perfecting our country dancing this week and can't wait to show you on May Day. This week we started to learn our maypole dance.

Congratulations to Isabelle who has taken Night home and Alice is Star of the Week.

Date for the diary: Next Wednesday is class photos.

This week we have loved reading Percy the Park Keeper stories. We will be continuing to work with Nick Butterworth's books over the next few weeks in English. Home learning this week is to try and visit your own local park over the bank holiday weekend. We would love some photographs of this to add to our displays.

In Maths, we have had a measures week where we have learnt to measure length, weight and capacity.

Following on from our trip last week, we have been looking at similarities between old and new canal boats. The children agreed that they would much rather live on a new canal boat rather than an old one.

Star of the week is Freddie for applying his writing skills to his work and Matthew is taking Night home for persevering with independent writing. Well done to both of you!

Date for your diary: Rickmansworth Festival is on Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st May if this interests you.

Red Nose Day! - 24.3.17

Today is Red Nose Day so we have come to school wearing something red. Thank you to everyone who brought a donation in to help raise money for people who are less fortunate than us.

We finished our safari vehicles this week in Design and Technology. We enjoyed making them so much that we thought Year 1 might like to do the same so we have written 'How to make a safari vehicle' instructions in English.

In Maths, we have been learning about money. We know that the same value can be made in lots of different ways e.g. 50p = 20p + 20p + 10p or 10p + 10p + 10p + 10p + 5p + 5p. We have practised adding amounts together to find a total and also using our knowledge of subtraction to calculate change. Please continue to practise this during home learning this week.

Today we said goodbye to Deahn as he embarks on a very exciting adventure in South Africa. You will be greatly missed Deahn - keep in touch!

Night is spending the weekend with Theo as he always challenges himself in his learning. Star of the week goes to Freddie for being a kind friend.

Maple Class Sharing Assembly - 17.3.17

Firstly, a huge congratulations to everybody in Maple Class for a fantastic sharing assembly which made Miss Forrester and Mrs Stewart very proud!

We have had a Design and Technology focus in our topic this week. We have been learning about vehicles and using technical words such as axle, axle holder, chassis and body to label different parts. We have designed our own vehicles and will be making them next week. If you have not already, please bring in a small cardboard box for your making.

In English, we have taken inspiration from 'We're going on a bear hunt' and written our own versions called 'We're going on an elephant hunt' set in Africa.

We have been exploring fractions in Maths, finding halves, quarters and thirds of shapes and quantities. We used our division strategies to solve fractions of numbers. We know that dividing by two is the same as finding half.

Today has been colourful day to celebrate our Kaleidoscope topic. We've loved dressing in bright colours and patterns!

Next Wednesday it is Maple's turn for woodlands so please make sure you have wellies in school on that day.

Congratulations to Benjamin who is Star of the week for his brilliant attitude towards his learning.

Friday 3 March 2017

Book Week - 3.3.17

This week has been book week and we have celebrated in lots of different ways. The theme this year has been fantasy and we have used our imaginations to create our own fantasy settings and characters.
JJ - 'My setting was called Cloudy Castle. It was in the sky and it had been abandoned for 10,000 years.'
Deahn - 'My setting was in a cave. The cave was full of talking puppies.'
Akeem - 'My main character was called Max and he was a spy with lots of gadgets.'
Bella - 'My character was a fairy called Rosetta. She was trapped inside a crystal hanging off a tree.'

It has also been problem solving week in maths. We have been learning to solve multiplication problems, thinking about the best strategy. Can you solve it in your head or do you need to use jottings?
Today we practised a mixed operations problem where we had multiplication, division, addition and subtraction problems muddled up. We had to think carefully about which operation we had to use and the strategy to help us. To take your learning further, you could continue to practise this at home.

In games this half term we are practising our tennis skills. We had to show control over the ball when bouncing it with the racket.

Star award goes to William B this week and our Learning Owl is Akeem. Well done to both of you!

"We looked at paintings that told the story of Sleeping Beauty." - Freddie
"The artist was from Russia and used patterns in his painting." - Alfie
"The repeated pattern was called a motif" - William M
"We looked at patterns in nature outside" - Deahn
Well done to all of the children for representing the school with their fantastic behaviour.

In English, we wrote a recount about our school trip. We used time connectives to show the order of events throughout the day.

In Maths, we have been using our place value knowledge to solve addition and subtraction problems mentally.

We looked at our finger prints in Science and found out that all of our finger prints are unique.
JJ said "My finger print is a loop"

Well done to Alfie for being our Learning Owl this week. He shows such a positive and responsible attitude towards his learning. We hope you enjoy your weekend with Night.

St Mary's Visit - 9.2.17

On Wednesday, we visited St Mary's church to learn about why the church is a special place for Christians. We learnt lots of fantastic facts about the church.
Jamie - St Mary's  church has got bigger over time because more and more people have moved to Redbourn.
Delilah - St Mary's church is over 900 years old!
Erin - There is one candle that is always lit to help people remember the people that have died.
Beth - Rev Will and Rev Tim think that Jesus was 33 years old when he died so they ring the bell 33 times before a service.
Well done to everyone in Maple Class for your fantastic behaviour on the trip and representing the school so well!

In Maths, we have been collecting and recording data. We have learnt that data means information. We asked children in our class what their favourite colour was and recorded the information as a tally chart. We then created a bar graph on the computer to show this information.

We created our own stories in creative writing. We used props to help us think of our stories.
Kiki's story was called 'The Cafe' and included the prop of a magic key. Lola's story was called 'The Wicked Witch' and included the prop of a crown.

Well done to Bella who is taking Night home for the half term. Bella has been thinking carefully about the presentation of her handwriting. Luca is star of the week!

Happy Half Term!

NSPCC Number Day - 3.2.17

Today is NSPCC number day and we have come to school wearing different numbers to raise money to help children less fortunate than us. Thank you to everyone who brought in a donation! We have taken part in number problem solving activities throughout the day.

We have been exploring poetry in English this week. We created actions to help us learn to recite the poem 'What is Red?' by Mary O'Neill. We wrote our own colour poems using expanded noun phrases to describe what different colours reminded us of.

We have been learning about weather in Geography this week. We learnt how the weather can affect people's jobs around the school and predicted the weather using a weather forcast. We have created our own weather symbols which we will use when completing our weather charts next week.

Congratulations to Theo who is star of the week for being a fantastic listener and team player. John has taken Night home this weekend as he always tries his best.

We will be visiting St Mary's Church next week for part of our RE learning. Please make sure that you have a warm coat and comfortable shoes on Wednesday.

Friday 27 January 2017

The Blue Coat - 27.1.17

This week we have learnt a new Jewish traditional tale called The Blue Coat. The theme of this story is to make something new out of something old and we linked this theme to our learning owl skill - persevering. We then created our own versions of the story. Erin called her story 'The Patterned Dog Jumper' and Benjamin chose 'The Green Scarf. We tried to include story language and repeated phrases within our story.

We have been practising our addition skills in maths. We learnt that the equals sign means 'the same as' and have used this knowledge to solve missing number problems. Keep practising this at home.

In Dance, we have been continuing to learn a routine to the song 'Singing in the rain'. This week we practised moving to the beat and counting our steps.

Friday 20 January 2017

William Morris - 20.1.17

Our Artist of the term is called William Morris. Lots of us found out facts through our Home Learning this week as well as in Topic.
"William Morris lived in the Victorian times" - Theo

"He loved the outdoors and used it as inspiration for his wallpaper" - Beth
"He likes to draw flowers" - Delilah

We have used William Morris' work as inspiration for our art this week. We have learnt different pencil techniques (hatching, contour hatching and cross hatching) and experimented using them when sketching flowers. We have created our own wallpaper using floral patterns. We mixed different shades of earthy colours to use on our wallpaper.

In Maths, we have been learning time. We have been learning O'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We know that there are 60 minutes in an hour and we have practised counting in 5s around the clock to tell the time.
