This week we have loved reading Percy the Park Keeper stories. We will be continuing to work with Nick Butterworth's books over the next few weeks in English. Home learning this week is to try and visit your own local park over the bank holiday weekend. We would love some photographs of this to add to our displays.
In Maths, we have had a measures week where we have learnt to measure length, weight and capacity.
Following on from our trip last week, we have been looking at similarities between old and new canal boats. The children agreed that they would much rather live on a new canal boat rather than an old one.
Star of the week is Freddie for applying his writing skills to his work and Matthew is taking Night home for persevering with independent writing. Well done to both of you!

Back to School - 21.4.17
Welcome back! We hope that you have all had a enjoyable and relaxing Easter break.
We've had a very busy first week back. On Wednesday we visited Rickmansworth Waterway Trust to learn about canals as part of our new topic called Out and About.
"We went on an old working canal boat called Roger. The living space was tiny and the toilet was a bowl under the seat!" - Tina
"We went on a boat ride along the canal and had to look for different kinds of birds and trees" - Tommy
"We dressed up as children from the past who worked on the canal boats 200 years ago" - Isabelle
"We opened the locks on the canal and it was really heavy to push" - Theo
"We could only open the lock when the water on both sides were equal level" - Alfie
We wrote a recount of our trip in English the next day. We've also retold the traditional tale of the The Three Little Pigs. We are feeling very proud of our writing
"I remembered to use full stops" - Benjamin
"I used lots of detail and speech marks in my paragraph" - William B
"I separated my writing into paragraphs and I used expanded noun phrases" - Erin
"I used commas in my expanded noun phrases" - Kiki
"I percivered in my writing" - Annie
Well done to Alice who is Star of the Week as she was able to give lots of ways for us to stay healthy during PSHE. Night will be spending the weekend with William B.

Red Nose Day! - 24.3.17
Today is Red Nose Day so we have come to school wearing something red. Thank you to everyone who brought a donation in to help raise money for people who are less fortunate than us.
We finished our safari vehicles this week in Design and Technology. We enjoyed making them so much that we thought Year 1 might like to do the same so we have written 'How to make a safari vehicle' instructions in English.
In Maths, we have been learning about money. We know that the same value can be made in lots of different ways e.g. 50p = 20p + 20p + 10p or 10p + 10p + 10p + 10p + 5p + 5p. We have practised adding amounts together to find a total and also using our knowledge of subtraction to calculate change. Please continue to practise this during home learning this week.
Today we said goodbye to Deahn as he embarks on a very exciting adventure in South Africa. You will be greatly missed Deahn - keep in touch!

Maple Class Sharing Assembly - 17.3.17
Firstly, a huge congratulations to everybody in Maple Class for a fantastic sharing assembly which made Miss Forrester and Mrs Stewart very proud!
We have had a Design and Technology focus in our topic this week. We have been learning about vehicles and using technical words such as axle, axle holder, chassis and body to label different parts. We have designed our own vehicles and will be making them next week. If you have not already, please bring in a small cardboard box for your making.
In English, we have taken inspiration from 'We're going on a bear hunt' and written our own versions called 'We're going on an elephant hunt' set in Africa.
We have been exploring fractions in Maths, finding halves, quarters and thirds of shapes and quantities. We used our division strategies to solve fractions of numbers. We know that dividing by two is the same as finding half.
Today has been colourful day to celebrate our Kaleidoscope topic. We've loved dressing in bright colours and patterns!
Next Wednesday it is Maple's turn for woodlands so please make sure you have wellies in school on that day.
Congratulations to Benjamin who is Star of the week for his brilliant attitude towards his learning.

Book Week - 3.3.17
This week has been book week and we have celebrated in lots of different ways. The theme this year has been fantasy and we have used our imaginations to create our own fantasy settings and characters.
JJ - 'My setting was called Cloudy Castle. It was in the sky and it had been abandoned for 10,000 years.'
Deahn - 'My setting was in a cave. The cave was full of talking puppies.'
Akeem - 'My main character was called Max and he was a spy with lots of gadgets.'
Bella - 'My character was a fairy called Rosetta. She was trapped inside a crystal hanging off a tree.'
It has also been problem solving week in maths. We have been learning to solve multiplication problems, thinking about the best strategy. Can you solve it in your head or do you need to use jottings?
Today we practised a mixed operations problem where we had multiplication, division, addition and subtraction problems muddled up. We had to think carefully about which operation we had to use and the strategy to help us. To take your learning further, you could continue to practise this at home.
In games this half term we are practising our tennis skills. We had to show control over the ball when bouncing it with the racket.
Star award goes to William B this week and our Learning Owl is Akeem. Well done to both of you!

Waddesdon Manor School Trip 24.2.17
Welcome back! We hope you all had a wonderful half term.
We have had a busy first week back and loved our trip to Waddesdon Manor.
"We went to an aviary where there were birds from around the world. My favourite bird had black and blue feathers" - Luca
"We looked at paintings that told the story of Sleeping Beauty." - Freddie
"The artist was from Russia and used patterns in his painting." - Alfie
"The repeated pattern was called a motif" - William M
"We looked at patterns in nature outside" - Deahn
Well done to all of the children for representing the school with their fantastic behaviour.
In English, we wrote a recount about our school trip. We used time connectives to show the order of events throughout the day.
In Maths, we have been using our place value knowledge to solve addition and subtraction problems mentally.
We looked at our finger prints in Science and found out that all of our finger prints are unique.

St Mary's Visit - 9.2.17
On Wednesday, we visited St Mary's church to learn about why the church is a special place for Christians. We learnt lots of fantastic facts about the church.
Jamie - St Mary's church has got bigger over time because more and more people have moved to Redbourn.
Delilah - St Mary's church is over 900 years old!
Erin - There is one candle that is always lit to help people remember the people that have died.
Beth - Rev Will and Rev Tim think that Jesus was 33 years old when he died so they ring the bell 33 times before a service.
Well done to everyone in Maple Class for your fantastic behaviour on the trip and representing the school so well!
In Maths, we have been collecting and recording data. We have learnt that data means information. We asked children in our class what their favourite colour was and recorded the information as a tally chart. We then created a bar graph on the computer to show this information.
We created our own stories in creative writing. We used props to help us think of our stories.
Kiki's story was called 'The Cafe' and included the prop of a magic key. Lola's story was called 'The Wicked Witch' and included the prop of a crown.
Well done to Bella who is taking Night home for the half term. Bella has been thinking carefully about the presentation of her handwriting. Luca is star of the week!
